HSFA Top 100: First Games of 2021 Shake Up Rankings

Four losses inside the Top 25 shook up the High School Football America 100, powered by NFL Play Football.

Preseason No. 13 Lowndes (Georgia), No. 15 Trinity (Kentucky), No. 17 Grayson (Georgia), and No. 22 Miami Central (Florida) all lost their season openers over the weekend.

The most shocking defeat was when unranked Creekside (Georgia) beat defending Georgia 7A champ Grayson, 19-14. The loss knocked the Rams all the way down to No. 147 this week. Creekside made its first-ever appearance in our national rankings at No. 136.

Lowndes was the highest-ranked team in Georgia before suffering an overtime defeat to Walton (Georgia). Lowndes slipped to No. 77 after the loss, and Walton, which was honorable mention in HSFA's preseason rankings, entered the HSFA 100 at No. 75.

Trinity fell to preseason No. 154 Carmel (Indiana), which crossed state lines to hand the Shamrocks a loss after trailing 17-0. Carmel climbed to No. 72, and Trinity tumbled to No. 76.

Miami Central's loss was on the west coast to California powerhouse St. John Bosco, which moved up one spot to No. 6 in the nation this week. The Rockets fell eight spots this week and will try to rebound this week when it plays No. 60 Bishop Gorman (Nevada) in Naples, Florida.

The other new addition to the Top 100 is Elder (Ohio), which moved from No. 101 to No. 100 after beating Covington Catholic (Kentucky).

Florida and Texas open their regular seasons this week. HSFA doesn't use the Florida Kickoff Classics in its proprietary rankings algorithm, since they don't count toward a team’s overall record.

In addition to the Gorman/Miami Central game, there will be nine other head-to-head matchups in the Top 100, including a showdown between No. 1 Mater Dei (California) and No. 14 Duncanville (Texas).

Here are the other Top 100 head-to-heads:

  • No. 32 St. Frances Academy (Maryland) at No. 4 St. Thomas Aquinas (Florida)
  • No. 6 Southlake Carroll (Texas) at No. 86 Highland Park (Texas)
  • No. 13 Bergen Catholic (New Jersey) at No. 16 Archbishop Hoban (Ohio)
  • No. 20 Oakland (Tennessee) at No. 85 Madison-Ridgeland Academy (Mississippi)
  • No. 25 Cardinal Gibbons (Florida) at No. 90 Venice (Florida)
  • No. 42 Good Counsel (Maryland) at No. 57 St. Joseph Regional (Montvale, New Jersey)
  • No. 100 Elder (Ohio) at No. 50 Pickerington Central (Ohio)
  • No. 80 Arlington Martin (Texas) at No. 82 Lake Travis (Texas)
