Davenport to Rename Football Stadium in Honor of Pro Football Hall of Famer Roger Craig

While three-time Super Bowl champion Roger Craig will be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton in August, his hometown honored his high school playing days Monday night. The Davenport Community School District voted to rename Brady Street Stadium as Roger Craig Stadium.

Craig was a standout running back for Davenport Central in the 1970s. The three-sport athlete was a sophomore when the school won Iowa’s 4A state championship in 1976. During his senior season in 1978, he broke his brother Curtis Craig’s single-season rushing record with 1,566 yards.

Iowans won’t be surprised by the name change. As far back as 1990, a local newspaper published letters from readers asking for the school district to honor Craig.

As a professional, Craig rushed for 8,189 yards with the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Raiders and Minnesota Vikings. He earned Pro Bowl honors four times in five years — 1986 and 1988-1990 — and was named a unanimous All-Pro and All-NFC selection in 1988. He was also named second-team All-Pro or All-NFC in 1985, 1987 and 1989.
