Mat Taylor on Winning Washington Boys' Tackle and Girls' Flag State Championships
Mat Taylor's name is etched into Washington high school football history. Last month, Taylor led Skyline to the first-ever Washington 4A girls' flag football state championship, becoming the first coach in WIAA (Washington Interscholastic Activities Association) history to win state championships in both boys' tackle football and flag football. He won four state titles as the head coach of the boys' tackle program.
Taylor, a longtime leader of the Spartans' storied tackle program, guided Skyline to multiple Class 4A state championships during his tenure as head coach. He won state titles in 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2012, known for his innovative pass-game strategies.
When girls' flag football became a sanctioned WIAA sport, Skyline launched its program with the same level of commitment and excellence that defined its tackle tradition. Treating the flag game with identical standards—including sophisticated passing concepts drawn from the school's championship-era offenses—Taylor and his staff helped a brand-new team evolve rapidly.
Below, High School Football America's Jeff Fisher talks with Taylor about his transition into the flag game.
