The growth of women’s flag football at the collegiate level is taking another major step forward. NIRSA, the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association and a leader in collegiate recreation, has announced the launch of the new NIRSA Club Flag League, a national women’s 7-on-7 flag football league that will begin play in January 2027.
The league is being launched in partnership with the NFL and is backed by an NFL grant designed to support the sport’s continued expansion on college campuses across the country. The inaugural season will culminate with a national championship event in April 2027 at a site that will be announced at a later date.
The first season of the NIRSA Club Flag League is expected to feature a strong collection of established universities and emerging programs, including the University of Georgia, University of Florida, Penn State University, University of Central Florida, Bowling Green, Radford, North Florida, Texas Southern and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, to name a few.
NIRSA officials say the new league is designed to create more structured competitive opportunities for women while helping grow one of the fastest-rising sports in America.
