Interview: Mickey McDermott talks about Jets Elite Girls Flag Football Club Travel Team
The New York Jets continue to grow the sport of girls' flag football. The National Football League team has announced the creation of the Jets Elite Girls Flag Football Club Travel Team.
The newly-formed team will compete in the High School division for 5-on-5 Flag Football Tournaments at the local, regional and national levels.
The team will feature top players from New Jersey and New York. Jets Flag Elite’s mission is to support, elevate, and empower girls' flag football by giving these young athletes the opportunity to connect with the Jets team and experience football at a more professional level.
The Jets are covering all costs including uniforms, equipment and tournament fees for the players. The only cost incurred will be transportation. The resources provided will develop girls flag football at the elite level, provide pathways to college scholarships and support opportunities for the USA National team as girls flag becomes an Olympic Sport in 2028.
Ridgewood High School head coach Mickey McDermott has been named the head coach of the team. He's led Ridgewood to back-to-back New Jersey High School Flag Football Championships.
Below, Coach McDermott talks with High School Football America’s Jeff Fisher about the honor of coaching the Jets Elite Flag team and the growth of flag at Ridgewood High.
