Where Every Super Bowl MVP Played High School Football
Seattle Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III is the first former Tennessee high school football player to win the Pete Rozelle Trophy as the Most Valuable Player in Super Bowl LX. He's also only the eighth running back to be named Super Bowl MVP.
Walker played at Arlington High School, a school located about 35 miles northeast of Memphis. It was there that Walker earned the nickname "K9." He finished his high school career with nearly 3,500 yards on the ground, averaging 6.9 yards per carry. He ran for 41 touchdowns and caught 16 more.
Below you can watch Walker's Hudl highlights from his senior season.
Sunday night against the New England Patriots, Walker ran for 135 yards on 27 carries and caught two passes for 26 yards, giving him a total of 161 yards from scrimmage.
Overall, 20 different states have former high school football players who have won MVP awards. California leads the way with fourteen, followed by Texas with 7.
- California – 14
- Texas - 7
- Louisiana – 6
- Florida, Pennsylvania – 5
- Ohio – 4
- Georgia – 3
- Alabama, New Jersey, Washington – 2
- Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia – 1
On the individual side, Tom Brady of Serra High School in San Mateo, California, leads the way with five MVP awards. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes of Whitehouse High (Texas) owns three Rozelle Trophies.
Three high schools — Isidore Newman (Louisiana), Lincoln (San Diego, California), Serra (San Mateo, California) — have had two different players win Super Bowl MVP's.
Wide receiver Lynn Swann, a Serra alum, won the MVP with the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl X, which gives the Padres six total MVP's when you add in Brady. The future Pro Football Hall of Fame QB won four Rozelle Awards with the Patriots and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Thanks to the Manning brothers, Newman has two SB MVP's. Peyton won the award after the Indianapolis Colts won Super Bowl XLI. Eli has two Pete Rozelle Awards. He won the MVP award with the New York Giants for Super Bowls XLII and XLVI.
Two running backs, who played scholastically at San Diego's Lincoln High have hoisted MVP trophies. Former Hornets running back Marcus Allen was honored in the Los Angeles Raiders Super Bowl XVIII win. Terrell Davis, the last running back before Walker, was honored for his performance when the Denver Broncos won Super Bowl XXXII.
