8 Michigan High School Football Champs Crowned at Ford Field

For the 19th year in a row, the Detroit Lions hosted the Michigan high school football championships. Eight state champs, including two teams ranked in the High School Football America 300 national rankings, powered by NFL Play Football, were crowned at Ford Field.

There was big shocker in the Division 1 championship game with unranked Southfield A&T snapping No. 53 Belleville’s 38-game win streak. The 36-32 win gave the Warriors their first-ever state championship and brought them into the national rankings at No. 158. The loss dropped the two-time defending champs to No. 160.

Muskegon made history with its 33-21 win over two-time defending Division 2 champ De La Salle Collegiate. The Big Reds became just the sixth high school football program to reach 900 all-time wins.

A couple of days later, the Lions named Muskegon head coach Shane Fairfield as their 2023 Coach of the Year, making him a finalist for the prestigious Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year Award.

Forest Hills Central the Division 3 title with a 27-10 win over Mason. It’s the Rangers first-ever state championship.

Harper Woods junior quarterback Carson Vis had a huge game with 441 passing yards and two touchdowns in the Pioneers 33-27 win over South Christian for the Division 4 championship. Vis also ran for 72 yards and one touchdown.

In Division 5, Grand Rapids Catholic Central added to its trophy case. The Cougars beat Corunna 21-7 for the program’s sixth state championship in the last eight years and 13th overall.

For the first time since 2005, Kingsley is celebrating a state title. The Stags beat Almont 38-24 for the Division 6 title. Senior running back Eli Graves scored four touchdowns while running for 214 yards on 34 carries.

For the second year in a row, Lumen Christi Catholic owns the Division 7 Michigan high school football championship. The Titans beat Menominee 34-30 for the school's fifth in the last eight years and 13th overall.

Ubly won the Michigan Division 8 high school football championship by beating Ottawa Lake Whiteford 21-6. It's the first state championship for Ubly and avenges last year's state championship loss by Ubly to Lake Whiteford.
